We recognise that the transition from school, employment, care giving, or parenting into university life can be difficult.

The Department, organises many activities to make this transition easier, including voluntary tutorial and discussion groups, sports afternoons, departmental functions and an open door policy.  Dr Sharon Walt also assists in the smooth transition for new undergraduate students.

There is a peer mentoring scheme whereby incoming students are paired up with a second or third year volunteer. The mentoring scheme has made an enormous difference to our departmental culture. Pass rates in difficult papers increased by 25% in the first year our department ran the scheme along with extra drop-in tutorials.
